You’ve made it through your teenage years, you thought the spots were behind you  – and then, out of nowhere, your skin starts breaking out again as a 20, 30, 40 + year old . Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

Adult breakouts are far more common than most people realise, and they’re one of the most frequent concerns I hear about at Take Five Skin & Laser. The frustrating truth is that acne and breakouts don’t always disappear with age. In fact, for many adults — particularly women — they can appear for the very first time in their 30s, 40s, or even beyond.

So what’s actually going on? Let’s take a look at some of the most common reasons your skin might be breaking out as an adult.

1. Hormonal Changes

Hormones are one of the biggest culprits behind adult breakouts. Fluctuations in oestrogen and progesterone — which can happen throughout your menstrual cycle, during perimenopause, after coming off the contraceptive pill, or as a result of conditions like PCOS — can trigger increased oil production in the skin, leading to clogged pores and breakouts.

Hormonal breakouts tend to cluster around the lower face — the chin, jawline, and neck — and often feel deeper and more painful than surface-level spots. If this sounds like your pattern, hormones could well be at the root of it.

2. Stress

Modern life is busy, and chronic stress has a very real impact on your skin. When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol — a hormone that signals your skin to produce more oil. More oil means more congestion, and more congestion means more breakouts.

If you notice your skin tends to flare up during particularly hectic periods at work, after a run of poor sleep, or during times of anxiety, stress is likely playing a significant role.

3. Your Skincare Routine

Sometimes, with the best of intentions, our skincare routine can actually be making things worse. Over-cleansing, using products that are too harsh, or applying heavy, pore-blocking moisturisers can all disrupt the skin’s natural balance and contribute to breakouts.

On the flip side, under-moisturising can also be a trigger — when skin is dehydrated, it can overcompensate by producing more oil, leading to that frustrating combination of tight, dry skin and spots at the same time.

4. Diet and Gut Health

There’s a growing body of evidence linking gut health and diet to skin condition. High-glycaemic foods (think sugary snacks, white bread, processed foods) can spike insulin levels and trigger inflammation in the body, which can show up on the skin as breakouts. Dairy is another common trigger for some people.

This doesn’t mean you need to overhaul your entire diet overnight — but it’s worth paying attention to whether certain foods seem to correlate with flare-ups.

5. Lifestyle Factors

A number of everyday habits can contribute to adult acne without you even realising:

  • Touching your face throughout the day transfers bacteria and oils from your hands to your skin
  • Dirty phone screens pressed against your cheek are a surprisingly common breakout trigger
  • Pillowcases that aren’t changed regularly can harbour bacteria and oils
  • Heavy makeup or makeup brushes that aren’t cleaned regularly can clog pores over time

Small changes in these habits can sometimes make a noticeable difference.

6. Changes in Medication or Health

Certain medications, including some contraceptives, steroids, and other prescription drugs, can affect the skin and trigger breakouts as a side effect. If your breakouts started around the same time as a change in medication, it’s worth discussing with your GP.

When Should You Seek Professional Help?

Occasional spots are a normal part of life, and a good skincare routine can go a long way in keeping them under control. But if your breakouts are persistent, painful, affecting your confidence, or leaving marks and scarring behind, it may be time to get some professional guidance.

At Take Five Skin & Laser, I offer skin consultations where I’ll take the time to really understand your skin, your lifestyle, and what might be driving your breakouts. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to acne — what works brilliantly for one person may do very little for another — which is why a personalised assessment is so valuable.

Depending on what I find, I may recommend a tailored skincare routine using Estime & Sens products to rebalance and support your skin at home, alongside professional treatments to help manage breakouts, calm inflammation, and address any scarring or congestion that’s already there.

You Don’t Have to Just Put Up With It

Breakouts as an adult can feel isolating and disheartening — especially when you feel like you “should” have grown out of them. But the good news is that with the right support and the right approach, real improvements are absolutely possible.

If you’re struggling with your skin, I’d love to help. A consultation is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation about your skin — and it could be the first step towards feeling confident in it again.
